Script Contest 2012

@ComicWho #Contest

Introduction
This contest is designed to engage Comic Who readers and make them part of the creative process behind the realization of the strip. Participants will be asked to write the script of a strip that will be brought to the attention of an international jury. The best one will be turned into a real strip and published on the Comic Who blog page.

The Subject
Each year we will propose a different subject on which the participants must rely to carry out their script. The subject this year is Smithy!
Every script must use our Eleventh Doctor as the main character; you can also include Tenny, Eccly and any other Comic Who character you want, but Smithy must be the protagonist. You can create parodies of events which occurred in the TV series Doctor Who, but original stories will be much appreciated.

The Jury
The jury will be composed by the following people:
- Elisa Moriconi (Comic Who Illustrator)
- Chiara Cavalli (The artist who realized the main price)
- Francesco Spreafico (Doctor-Who.it webmaster)
- Lady Soliloque (Writer and Video Editor)
- Luke Williams (The Doctor Who Site webmaster)
- Michael David Key (Artist)
- Craig Hurle (Doctor Who and the Tardis by Craig Hurle administrator)

Contest Rules
- The contest will begin at 0:00 AM (GMT) on March 1, 2012 and will end at 11:59 PM (GMT) on March 31, 2012.
- Scripts must be uploaded through the automatic submit page at this link.
- All scripts sent outside of the validity period of the contest will be ignored.
- All scripts must be written in proper English (no slang will be accepted).
- It will be accepted only one script per person.
- The Comic Who staff will answer with an email by communicating the acceptance of the script or the reasons for which have been refused.
- Winners will be announced on April 8, 2012.
The jury's decision is final!

Script Rules
- No obscenity and/or vulgarity and/or violence will be accepted.
- Every script must be divided into 4 (four) vignettes.
- You have to describe all the backgroungs as you are describing a picture.
- You have to describe exactly the laying and the facial expression of each character in the vignette.
- No more than 4 (four) characters are allowed into a single vignette.
- No more then 3 (three) balloons are allowed into a single vignette.
- No more then 30 (thirty) words are allowed into a single vignette (this includes onomatopoeia). Example: if you have two ballons into a vignette, you can write 15 words in the first one, 14 in the secont and use 1 onomatopoeia.

Tips & Tricks
- Strips are like puns, should make people laugh by saying a few things, basing mainly on the expressions and comic absurdities.
- Don't waste time creating complex stories, usually a simple situation is much more fun. Sometimes you do not even need words to make people laugh (think of the Valentine's Day spcial).
- Too many characters and dialogues are often synonymous with confusion and risk of boring the reader. Try to be as concise as possible.
- Remember that vignettes provide a limited space, so do not overdo the details, otherwise you may not have enough space available for carrying out the scene.
- Read this Facebook Note to understand how to create a script.
- If you have doubts or concerns, please send an email to comicwho@gmail.com. The Comic Who staff will answer soon as possible.

Contest Winner Award & Prizes
- The winning story will be drawn by Elisa Moriconi (the Comic Who Illustrator) and published on our comic blog (with all the credits to the original author).
- The winner will receive a figurine of Smithy made in Polymer Clay (The one you can see on the flyer).
- The second place will win a Commission of a digital color illustration of a single character on white backgroung realized by Elisa Moriconi.
- The third place will win a Commission of a pencil sketch of a single character on simple backgroung realized by Elisa Moriconi.

The Fan Choice Award
After the contest scripts of stories that are classified by the # 2 to # 10 will also be published as Notes on the Comic Who Facebook Fanpage. The public will choose the best by putting the "like" on the favorite script.
- The vote will take place from April 8, 2012 to April 14, 2012.
- The winning story will be drawn by Elisa Moriconi (the Comic Who Illustrator) and published on our comic blog.
- The author will win a Commission of a digital color illustration of a single character on white backgroung realized by Elisa Moriconi.

September 2011

We received a great gift on September. A great friend of us, Chiara Cavalli, created a tiny statue of Rory the Roman upon Elisa's Comic Who design. We were so proud of this wonderful gift we received that we made a complete photo shoot.

It's an amazing piece of art! It's perfect in every angle and we love it! It's actually on my desk and every time I need inspiration I look at it. If you want to see the full gallery of pictures, just hit this link!
I think it's too early to talk about this, but Chiara is working on something new... keep an eye on the blog!

Anyway, the moving is over and it's time to make some new strips! This time the inspiration came from the 2010 Christmas special... we know that the Doctor isn't good with moneys, but maybe the problem isn't with moneys, but with his wallet...

Another good point to join our Facebook page is becase sometimes we involve our followers in the creation process of a script: this time I asked on the page which characters they would like to see in a strip and the  most wanted were River and Jenny. This is what my mind has given birth:

The month is coming to an end, so it's time for a new Comic Who Confidential. This is my favorite one and explain why Russel T Davies chose Daleks and Cyberman to end the second series of Doctor Who. Take a look...

I think there's no need of explanations... see you tomorrow for a new post!

July 2011

Do you ever wondered what the Doctors eat? Well, I do, and which better occasion then a dinner with friends, and the last wash the dishes!

This time, in the third panel, we introduced every single companion in all the first 5 series, and what about the  TARDIS junkyard? Well, it's not the same seen in The Doctor's Wife, but when I wrote the script the episode hasn't aired yet ^_^
A little tease for the new year... the TARDIS Junkyard is coming back, and if you follow us on Facebook maybe you know what I'm talking about!

We've seen Limeykins a lot of times with the Doctors, but what about Simmy? He loose his freind and now he lives with a baby version of himself... we think he is going to miss his good old Limey...

A heart breaking strip for a great character... A lot of followers are loving him more then Eccly, Tenny or Smithy!

It's time for a new collaboration. Michela Magnani sent me a script, a very good script, so we decided to realize it! Let's see what came out...

If you want to send us a script, don't hesitate to write to comicwho@gmail.com. We read every submission, and if it's good maybe we'll create a strip from your idea! If I remember well, the first strip of the new year is from a follower who sent us her script.

Anyway, last strip of the month, so it's time for a new Comic Who Confidential, this time we show you a little joke made by Limeykins and Smithy during the shooting of the Valentine's Day Special.

We loved it ^_^

See you tomorrow!

May 2011 - The First Contest

As you may remember, on March we started our first contest, on May 1st we published the results. Our wonderful jury selected their favorite scripts and you can find the top ten at this link.

It was a difficult choice to pick up the winner because there where a lot of good works! The top three received some of our goods as rewards and the first script was finally realized by our great illustrator Elisa.

But there's more... Infact, the top ten scripts were published on our Facebook page where our followers were able to choose their favorite. The winner was published on our blog with the strip drawn by Elisa. You can download the complete collection of scripts at this link.

Anyway, it's time for a new strip! We scheduled the strips taken from the contest starting from the second week of May, just to give Elisa enough time to realize them. The first strip of the month was originally scheduled as the Easter special, but we decided to postpone it because we wanted to remember Elisabeth Sladen with this strip.
Well, originally I had the idea for a Carnival special but then I realize that Carnival was already over. I was about to discard the idea when I though: 'Hey, they are the Doctors, they have a time machine!' so I just adapted the story to fit into the new time setting:

The Torchwood reference came from the fact they were airing some rerun on satellite TV. Even Limeykins was a late addition to the strip (he didn't exists when I wrote the script) but this was an occasion to point out the fact that he's living with the Doctors and he is afraid of coming back to Simmy's house!
As you can notice the Doctors are dressing like other classic Doctors (8th, 5th and 4th) and even Simmy is dressed like a Doctor (the 6th) while Baby Yana is dressing like a Time Lord. Inside Simmy's house you can see all the companions dressed as other Doctors even if the image is too small to understand it (Rose as the 1st, Amy as the 7th, Donna as the 2nd and Martha as the 3rd).

The next two strips are from the contest winner Jonathan Hodges and the Facebook award winner Faith Marie Vinnicombe.

We loved how they came out and we're just planning a new contest like this one! We hope to have the same success of the 2011's.

May was a month full of surprises, infact we introduced also a new series of strips... a sort of Extra strips... we wanted to do something like the Doctor Who Confidentials... showing a sort of behind the scenes of Comic Who. We named them Comic Who Confidentials and we started with a guest wirter, a freind of us: Michela Magnani.

If you didn't understand, the two guys talking with Sherlock are Mark Gatiss and Steven Moffat... Actually there were more things in this months, but we're going to talk about that in a separate post!

See you tomorrow!

Bad Feelings

A few months ago I asked on our Facebook Page what kind of subject they would like to see covered on our strips. A lot of fan asked us to introduce the character of Jenny (10th Doctor's daughter). It was quite hard to find a good way to introduce her, but then I thought about what would happen if Jenny had appeared during a date between the Doctor and River...and what if the Doctor wasn't Tenny? Check it out!

This was just an experiment, but if you like it, I will try to increasingly involve the Facebook community. One last thing, we added a little easter egg into the strip. It's quite easy to find it, but I think it's still funny ^_^

Life on Mars versus Doctor Who

It's a wibbly wobbly period for us... Moving to a new home, lot of work, no internet connection for nearly a month and the hottest summer I can remember... I really hope to go back to normality as soon as possible, but now you have to be patient and the Comic Who strips will not be released every monday as before until the end of moving (we're also planning some holidays :D). Anyway, we want to thanks all of you for your great support and love. We reached over 1000 fans on our Facebook page... whooo hooo!!!
Today we are not posting a new strip but a tribute to another british series we love so much: Life on Mars! We really hope you like this because it's our way to thank you for your appreciation in this months. Enjoy!

The Truth Behind Limeykins

Hi ComicWhovians!
The today's post is meant for a different reason, I want to tell about a little and extremely cute and green Teddy Bear which is becoming our mascotte!
In the recent strips we introduced a little bear that lives with the three Doctors and some readers asked us who he is (yes, he, not it :D) and where he come from... The answer is simple, he is just a mistake!!! :D
Just take a look to the following strip, the first featuring Limeykins:

We wanted to add some cute staff to make Simmy more funny, so Elisa sorted out a green teddy bear, but in the last panel she forgot to draw it. As you can see, in the third panel Simmy left the bear that falls down, but in the forth panel it isn't still there because the Simmy's baloon covered all that area. When I noticed it I just said "Hey, make him run away like the others", so you can find the little bear in the right angle running away from Simmy (or maybe from Yana, who knows).
Anyway, this simple idea makes someone laugh (well, me for example :D) and a girl from deviantArt also named the bear. And when you give a name to something, you start to love it, and now we love Limeykins!
It was a funny thing but it could end there... At that moment we had already written  scripts until July (at this moment we have script scheduled until the end of October and, yes, this year Halloween falls on Monday :D), so we couldn't simply add a new character in every strip... But mistakes are always helpful and another one leads the way to the full integration of Limeykins in our stories. Just take a look to the following strip:

This strip was supposed to take fool of the Stonehenge speech. As you can see, the Doctor is standing on a stone, right in the middle of a stone to be more precise. This time Smithy is a bit decentralized on his stone leaving a good amount of free space on the right... and there comes the idea... we decide to fill that space with Limeykins shaking his hand like Smithy.
We received good comments and people liked the idea. For some unknown reasons, Limeykins decided to leave Simmy and went to live with the three Doctors. Adding him in every strip is quite easy... sometimes he just do a little cameo, but sometimes he also "do stuff". For instance, in Carnival Party, when Smithy proposes to go the Simmy's party, Limeykins is scared and in the following panel he goes away on tiptoe, just like he doesn't love the idea to meet his old "friend" (well, I don't think he has anything against Simmy, I think that he doesn't have a good feeling with little Yana... but it's just an idea, maybe we will ask him in a future Comic Who Confidential). Just a last word about the Stonehenge strip... did anybody noticed Rory? ;-)

Anyway, this is how the idea cames out and I hope you like this new character. I'm quite sure that we will see more about him in the near future! Following all the strips featuring our new mascotte:
